Discovery Shed

This is an Ident for Discovery shed on Sky. Discovery Shed are a Channel housed under the Discovery channel, but what is interesting is that although they use the word discovery within their name they have identified themselves with their own identity.

Personally I don't think that a viewer would know that this channel was directly associated with the Discovery Channel without having prior knowledge.

Animation Using Cogs

This is an animation that I found by animation company 'Once were Farmers'. This piece is actually an Ident for the animation company istelf.

When I decided to create an Ident for the 'Discovery Channel',  initially I thought of the idea of 'how things work' and mechanical elements. Clearly my research into the nature of the channel itself will lead me to the ensuring that my Ident reflects the type of programmes that are shown, however as a starting point I think that this will be a good place to start.

Lionsgate Animation

This is an animation that Andy told me about after discussing my initial ideas about creating something mechanical.

Discovery Channel Ident

This is an Ident for the Discovery channel. One of the interesting thing about this is the style that has been used. From watching the piece you have a clear understanding that the ident is for the Discovery channel. The colours used are the ones expressed through the channels identity, which helps you to instantly realize that the ident is for the Discovery Channel.

Looking at the piece you can see that particles have been used. These work great in terms of building up the figures/shapes etc. We are taken on a journey through this piece and our attention is held throughout. The use of these particles allow the viewer to follow them and remain interested.

Channel Ident

For our new brief we have been given the task of creating a 10 second channel ident.  For this brief although it's not compulsory to create a 3D ident, its been suggested that  it might be an ideal time to use 3D.

I really fancy having a play at using 3D in this project and when given this brief one of the first channels that I thought of was the Discovery channel. I've been looking at the Discovery Channel at a lot of the idents are succinct and too the point. We have only been given 10 seconds of time to play with, so what we create needs to do the same.

Thoughtful Talk

Visiting Lecture: Thoughtful
16/02/10

Stu and Chris from Thoughtful came and gave us a talk in which they ran through their history as designers and how 'Thoughtful' came about. I think out of all of the talks that we've had it was the most honest. They weren't afraid to tell us the problems that they have had instead of just the positives.

They started of by introducing the different things that interested them, not just design realted but also other asspects. One thing that they said was that they keep
scrapbooks, which is something which I started collecting stuff for a while ago but never got around to it. Maybe I might do now! They said that sometimes when your stuck for an idea going back to one of the scrapbooks could be the perfect way to get them out of a rut.

They showed us videos of how they went about projects in the form of a video diary. This is something which they said had been important to them and something that they wanted to continue doing. Not only does it show them engaging with the brief, but that there getting involved to the nth degree.

Thoroughout the presentation they had video questions from designers and people of interest. These acted as words of wisdom and really broke the presentation up. At the end of the lecture they were happy to answer any questions, evern after that lots of us stayed behind as they wanted advice from us on how the presentation could be better as they were doing it again later in this month.

Audio

Although I considered the option of using a poem as a voice over I have decided to use natural city sounds. I went out this weekend and the previous one, in order to collect sounds. However, in terms of hand in I didn't have time to use these for the piece, but this is what I intend on doing for submitting the piece to competition.

Book Referencing

Postcode links?

I'm going to have a look at drawing parallels between the coding references on books and that of postcodes.

Audio

I've been thinking about how I could use audio within the piece that I'm going to create. Initially I thought that I would like to find some music which create the right mood. In a group crit today we talked about creating the sense of mood and getting the right feel for the piece, in order to set the tone.

Heres an example of a poem I found relating to the city:
